MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING
BOARD OF COUNCILMEN
FARMERS BRANCH, TEXAS
JANUARY 7, 1957
The City Council met in a regular meeting on January 7, 1957 at
7:30 P.M. with the following present:
Mayor
Lawson Lewis
Councilmen
Thomas Reeder
James Brodhead
H. N. Mallon
John Wilsey
City Manager
John J. Gray
City Secretary
Naomi Goodnight
Rev. W. B. Carraway of First Baptist Church gave the invocation.

This is the beginning of the new policy to have ministers of various
churches give the invocation.
QUARTERLY REPORT
The City Manager explained the first quarterly report would be based
on the record of receipts and disbursements prepared by the auditor and
transposed from the language of the new classification of accounts to the
general catagories of estimates made for this year and presented in the
form of our financial statement (budget). The report will be ready by
next Council meeting.

HODGES PROPERTY
The Council authorized City Manager to proceed with nogiation of
purchasing the W. W. Hodges property on Bfe St. for usage of storage and
maintenance. This motion was made by Councilman Mallon, seconded by
Councilman Reeder.
CIVAI DEFENSE EXECUTTVF' COMMITTEE
Six of the seven'required people's names were presented to the Council
for the attentitive approval for the Civil Defense Executive Committee.
Councilman Wilsey suggested these names were acceptible.
ADDISON ANNEXATION EAST_OF CITY.LIMITS.
Mayor Lewis and Councilman Reeder said they would talk to the owners of
the property Addison annexed East of our city limits in order to explain
to them the wisdom of coming into Farmers Branch.
BAD DJBTS do DEPOSIT REFUNDS
On a motion by Councilman Wilsey seconded by Councilman Brodhead the
Council accepted Auditors R. B. Smith's amounts of bad debt and deposit
refunds to be removed from the accounts receivable.
CONTRACTORS & ENGINEERS ESTIMATES
On a motion by Councilman Brodhead, seconded by Councilman Wilsey,
the contractors and engineers estimates were approved for payment Contractor
Cary's estimate--$10,92$.02
Engineer Rady's estimates $262.27 and $377.67.
TAX INCREASE DISCUSSION
Councilman Mallon brought up a discussion of a capital improvement
program that might include a tax increase. The general feeling was that if
the people wanted these improvements bad enough they would not mind the
tax increase.
BEAUTIFICATION OF VALLEY VIEW
The Council discussed beautifying the entrance at Highway 77 and
Valley View Lane and Valley View throughout the City.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT
The Council heard a report from George Hixon, president of the
Chamber of Commerce, stating that Texas Power & Light Co. representatives
expressed interest on a City plan to utilise power line right-of-way for
future road use in the proposed commercial district downtown. Mr. Hixon
also reported that a proposed site for the Baptist Junior College was being
considered in the North Dallas area and that Farmers Branch had been
designated second choice for the location by the Baptist Convention.
Mr. Hixon indicated that Saint Paul Hospital was also interested in a
25 acre tract in this vicinity.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned.
